Mdina & Rabat Traffic

Malta · Live conditions, incidents and cameras

Mdina ('the Silent City') and adjacent Rabat are major tourist destinations. The approach via Mdina Road from Attard is the primary access, and it can congest sharply around tour-bus arrivals and Saturday weddings.

Cameras at Attard (Mdina Road and Mdina-Chetcuti) give a live view of inbound traffic. Saqqajja Hill is narrow and one-way in parts — a single bus or delivery van can stop the flow entirely.

Plan to arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 for the quietest conditions. Parking around Mdina is limited to the area outside the city walls.

Major roads

  • Mdina Road (from Attard)
  • Saqqajja Hill
  • Triq il-Buskett
  • Triq San Pawl (Rabat)
  • Mtarfa Road

Key landmarks nearby

  • Mdina Gate (the famous main entrance)
  • St Paul's Cathedral
  • Bastion Square (sunset views over the central plain)
  • Buskett Gardens (the only natural woodland in Malta)
  • Verdala Palace

Parking

There is no parking inside Mdina — the city is fully pedestrianised inside the walls. The closest paid car park is the Howard Gardens lot on the approach from Rabat, but it fills quickly on weekends.

Rabat (immediately outside Mdina) has more parking options, including the area near St Paul's Catacombs and several side streets. From Rabat, Mdina is a 5-10 minute walk through the main gate.

Public transport alternatives

Buses to Mdina/Rabat connect from Valletta (route 51), Sliema (route 202), Buġibba (route 186) and Mosta (route 50/51). The terminus is just outside the city walls in Rabat — a short walk to Mdina Gate.

Avoid driving on Saturdays during peak wedding season (April-October) when Saqqajja Hill clogs with bridal cars. The bus from Rabat continues to work normally.
